And they're off....school has started and we are finally starting to get into a routine after about 3 weeks.
Erin - She is doing great in 1st grade. She has already set herself apart from the rest. When her teacher (Ms. Tyson) asked everyone to write their numbers on a piece of paper to see how far they could write them, only Erin asked if they could use the number line above the blackboard. She wasn't supposed to notice it was there. Even Ms. Tyson had to comment that she would have loved to be in class with Erin...she couldn't remember if any previous student had noticed the numbers already there above the blackboard. Erin is doing a great job picking up her reading where she left off. Our goal is to read 2 books every night and take tests on them. Erin had her first spelling test this past Friday - she got a 100 (YEAH!!!). Erin is taking dance this year (hip hop). If anyone has had the chance to see Erin dance, you know this is right up her alley. She loved her first class. They have a recital around December..we'll keep you posted.
Emily - doing great in Melinda's class. She is still in her GT (gifted & talented) class as well. They were studying about Rome. They got to select Latin names and Em chose, Melissa. Emily loves the babysitter club book series...I think she may have read all of them by now. So far, Em hasn't received anything except a 100 on all of her homework. She has been working very hard. Em is playing soccer again...she still has that grumpy coach (Dad). She is doing very well. They won their first game...Em played half of the game helping us score and the other half as the goalie. She had a GREAT save on a girl that had gotten behind the defense. This girl came close to Em and kicked the ball high. Em jumped up and stopped the shot and then grabbed it after it bounced once (sweet save).
E - she has been really busy again. She had a change in her schedule. She decided to try out for volleyball. There were 48 girls that tried out for the team and only 24 made it. She did well, but wasn't selected. She is the first alternate (she continues to practice with the team and assists the coach with the books during the game). If any girl has to leave the team (grades, etc), E is on the team. She really enjoys volleyball. She decided to drop jazz band. With a new band director and assistant director, it wasn't as fun as it would have been last year. She is working as an aide for the librarian instead. She is still in band and cheerleading. She is very busy. She cheers at games on Monday night, volleyball on Tuesdays/Thursdays, and cheer practice on Wednesday & Friday.
Melinda is doing well with the math specialist role she assumed the beginning of the year. She teaches half the day in her class, then works with others the other half. If it sounds like too much work, it is. Melinda is still getting everything organized. Once she does, she will really enjoy helping everyone else.

End of summer - back to school
Things have started to get crazy and we are still a week away from school starting. Melinda had to go back this week. She has 2 teachers she is mentoring, 1 student teacher to work with, and work as the math specialist for the entire school. It's exhausting just saying everything she has to do this year.
We are looking forward to Emily being in Melinda's class this year. Em is pretty excited. Em is signed up for soccer again...God help her - Dad is coaching one more time. She is looking forward to seeing all her friends and getting back to work.
Erin is a teenager already (Dad, I would rather be sick than go to school). She will have the same 1st grade teacher E and Em had, Linda Tyson. She is terriffic and Erin will really enjoy her class. Erin has decided to pursue dance again. This time it will be hip-hop. She has been practicing quite a bit in the living room. Where do they pick up these moves? Certainly not Dad! We are about to start reading Junie B. Jones 1st Grader, Aloha-ha-ha and Dumb Bunny. Erin will probably let everyone know how they turn out.
E has already had her 1st cheerleader routine in front of people (6th grade orientation). She will cheer on Mondays during the 7th grade football games. She is really excited about finally getting to do cheerleading with her buddies. She has a good schedule with band and jazz band, athletics (volleyball and basketball), honors English/Math/Social Studies/Science. She is going to be really busy, but it sounds like it will be a GREAT year.

Abuelo and Barb visit
We had a fun visit with Abuelo and Barb. Didn't do a whole lot, but those are the best vacations (for me anyway). The girls did go to the hotel pool and swim for a couple of hours...gotta make time for cannonball practice.
Erin has been taking swim lessons from the high school swim coach and she is doing GREAT! She wants to be on the swim team now...she's too young but maybe next year.
Emily has decided to play soccer again this season. She is considering joining the swim team as well.
E has been having cheerleading practices every few weeks. She is interested in the swim team, but there just isn't a way to work it out. She would swim in her last period of school at the high school swim center, then try and rush back to the middle school right after that for cheerleading practice. We are trying to find the best day to go swim laps as a family. I get the feeling all of the girls are going to beat Dad.
Melinda is trying to get things organized for school (not a fun time). She will be teaching half-day and doing her math specialist role for the other half-day. She will share her room with the reading specialist, so she has to make room. Mel is looking forward to the challenge of the new role, but there is going to be a ton of preparation. Her summer may have just ended.
We are preparing for the Erin and Elizabeth's birthdays. Erin is having a sleep-over. E is still deciding. I will try and do better with pictures especially for the parties.

Summer Girls
We got started on our summer activities. Emily just completed the University of Texas soccer camp this past week. She had a great time and did a terrific job. She met some girls at camp she really had fun with...one was all the way from Oklahoma. Now that soccer camp is over, Emily is all about swimming and gymnastics.
Erin - Hard to believe anyone could be more excited about swimming than Erin. She loves the water. We are trying to set up swim lessons with the Temple High School swim coach. Erin has decided she wants to try martial arts (God help us). We may try and find the best place for her with that as well this summer.
Elizabeth - E is loving the swimming pool too. E has a busy time next week - cheerleader camp for 3 days. They are going to be learning new routines, jumps, etc. She is excited about getting started. She is also doing gymnastics this summer. Everyone is staying busy despite it being summer.
Melinda has a math conference to go to next week in San Antonio. Hopefully, it will be fun and she will get some good info.

Summer is here!!!
We finally finished the school year...YEAH!!! We are looking forward to a busy summer, but not close to the craziness of the school year.
Erin - She graduted from kindergarten and is now Erin Chavez - 1st Grader. She is sad to leave her teacher, Mrs. Key, but excited to go to Mrs. Tyson's class. She did a great job reading at the end of school and we have a project to read a lot during the summer. Erin has gymnastics and swimming as her other things to do this summer. We were really proud of Erin and her first year of school. She is getting really big.
Emily - She had one last project at the end of school. She went on a couple of field trips to different areas in Temple and created a powerpoint presentation the city council came to see. She did a great job with her partners discussing why Temple is a good place to visit. Emily has a busy summer planned. She is going to the University of Texas soccer camp next week (9am-3pm). She had a great time 2 years ago when she went and was excited to go this year. They will spend about 30-45 minutes at one of the UT pools to cool down during camp. Em is really excited about the pool. Emily is also going to be taking gymnastics and swimming will be a top priority. Emily, Elizabeth, and Dad have planned to read the latest Harry Potter book together this summer as well.
Elizabeth - E finished the year with a bang. She made one of the jazz bands she tried out for (Mustang Jazz Band) and made the symphonic band. They only took the top couple of kids for Jazz and top few for the symphonic. She is considering taking up the saxophone for Jazz band and clarinet or saxophone for symphonic. E has a very busy summer planned as well. She has cheerleader camp the last week of June. She is really looking forward to going and getting into it. E is going to be involved in gymnastics, swimming, and playing the occasional tune for Mom & Dad.
Melinda finished the year needing some R&R. Unfortunately, she is not going to get too much with all the activities planned. She is staying in 4th grade next year, but may get to use her Math Specialist role in addition. She would down play the compliment, but she is as good as it can get. Hopefully, she is looking forward to a lot of swimming this summer too.

Girls school awards
It's been really busy with end of school programs and activites.
Emily - Had her presentation on eagles for her Gifted & Talented class that went very well. They put their skit on a CD-ROM and had it loop. Emily wrote the entire script for her group and help the others with puppets. She worked really hard and did a great job. We had Emily's awards today at school, and the kid cleaned up. She was a top reader, finished 3rd in UIL competition for Ready Writing (creative writing), A's in every subject throughout the year, and was Commended Performance for Reading (missed 0 questions) and Math (only missed 2 questions). We are trying to get used to Em being a 4th grader now.
Erin - We have her kindergarten graduation next week. Erin received a star medal for doing so well with her reading. Erin and Dad went on her class field trip to the zoo. It was a little warm, but we had a great time. One of Erin's favorites at the zoo were the glowing jellyfish. They were small and fun to watch swim. Erin has had a great year at school as well.
Elizabeth - She has had an incredible year. Elizabeth competed in a number of UIL events (spelling, number sense, and math), winning 3rd place overall in math. E recieved the Johns Hopkins Scholar award for math. She competed in UIL band (solo and ensemble). Her ensemble group did well and received 2's for their performance. For her solo, she received the highest marks given (1's) and received a 1st place ribbon and medal. She has tried out for Jazz and Symphonic bands - we will know next week if she made either one. E loves the clarinet, but is considering the sax for Jazz band. Elizabeth also received Commended Performance for her scores on the Reading and Math TAKS tests.
Next week ends our school year. Can't believe how fast it has gone by. Stay tuned for more next week...

Elizabeth Awards
We are halfway through the end of school programs and awards. Elizabeth took center stage during the latest awards. She won the 6th grade science fair and received a medal for winning. She won the award for most outstanding science student - only 4 kids won this award. She also won the President's Award for Academic Excellence for getting all A's all year long. Needless to say, we are very proud of Elizabeth.
Erin had some news of her own. She not only got a soccer trophy - she did great and had fun playing, but also managed to lose some teeth along the way. We celebrated cinco de mayo with Erin losing her 1st tooth. She decided to lose a 2nd tooth the next day. Dad helped her pull those boys out. The tooth-fairy was very happy to get Erin in on the fun and left her too much money.
Erin and Emily have awards program coming up and Emily has a gifted & talented (GT) presentation on Thursday.
